As the War Between the States began, many thought that the war would be a brief excursion and people would soon be back to their regular lives. As many believed in the South, �a lady�s thimble will hold all of the blood that will be shed� (McPherson 238). This could not have been farther from the truth. The soldiers that fought during the Civil War fought with pride, honor, and a strong desire to succeed. This led to many soldiers losing their lives during fierce battles with the enemy. Those that were wounded in battle often lost their lives after the battle due to a lack of medical knowledge and resources. This was due to the poor state of medicine at the beginning of the Civil War. Many soldiers attempted to conceal injuries and illnesses because they viewed a visit to the hospital as a death sentence. As the war progressed, advances were made in the way of battlefield medicine.
