Salvation Through War History 297: Crusades and the Image of Islam Fulcher of Chartres account of the call to arms for the first crusade is more an appeal to a diversion than anything else. In the introduction we see bible verses rousing up the lower classes to aspire to perfection in all of their labor. We also see the state of affairs in the countryside which seem to be less than safe from crime. It seems that Fulcher is appealing to the people of ill-repute and criminal tendencies, focusing on salvation through war and less on the terrible deeds of the infidel in the east. This account has more of a feel of an advertisement for absolution than trying to outrage a populace at the horrible tragedies visited upon the helpless and God-fearing peoples of Jerusalem. In the first paragraphs Fulcher describes Urban II�s preaching that seem to focus on curbing the flow of violence and robbery that plague the local countryside. �Let the robbers and burners of homes and their accomplices, banished from the church, be smitten and excommunicated� (Peters, 28-29).
