Richard, Shylock, Antonio…Villains Jamie Viers Shakespeare Into Film: Paper 1 Three characters, all alike in their pursuit of “power.” The word power is quite different in all cases though. One character, physically deformed, takes pleasure in the pursuit of power. Another character thinks he’ll gain power by revenge, but in the end still remains a lowly Jew. And, the last character finds comfort in power because he is not of the Jewish faith, which makes him far more superior. While they are similar in their push for power, they are also similar in that they are unhappy in their current state In Richard III, Richard owns the play. This is made very clear at the very beginning of the play where he separates himself from all of the other characters by his cruel and deceptive march towards power. The play begins with Richard speaking to the audience. He references his deformity saying "rudely stamp'd...Cheated of feature by Dissembling Nature, deformed, unfinished. The description of his deformity is an indication to the audience of his separation from nature and cruel acts ......
