Things Fall apart by Chinua Achebe - Like Father Like Daughter Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Man has always had preconceptions. A battle has always existed to either break down or build up those illusions. In Things Fall Apart, Achebe demonstrates how one man will go to any lengths to build up specific notions about himself as well as break down other peoples expectations of him. Achebe’s main character, Okonkwo, is very much an anti-hero and the reader is hard pressed to like him. He is a cruel man even by his societal standards. When it suits him, he will defy traditions to appease his anger such as beat his wife on a sacred day with no remorse. Okonkwo is obsessed with manliness, strength and success. Okonkwo is burdened with his own preconceptions and bias about women and what he perceives as weakness. He is intolerable of anything that is not manly or strong and demonstrates it repeatedly sometimes quite violently.
