The Outsider Take-Home Essays;
1) Existentialism can be defined as a ‘philosophical attitude opposed to rationalism and empiricism, that stresses the individual’s unique position as a self-determining agent responsible for the authenticity of his or her choices.1’ The existential viewpoint simply states that one is put into this world and therefore a life. According to this point of view man did not chose his life nor is he responsible for it. It also believed that a higher power does not have any effect on the outcome of their lives. This is shown by Meursault’s realization in prison; ‘I’d suddenly realized how closed in I was by these prison walls.2 (pg. 75)’ The prison walls represent society and the effect that society has on the individual. In order to fit into society one must follow the rules of that society and in a sense ‘play the game3.’ Meursault doesn’t play the game or follow the conventions of society thus making him an outsider.
This explains the existentialist point of view that ‘there was no way out,’ as a person who believes in existentialism would feel closed ......
