The song describes the key elements that surrounded the plague from the red rash in the shape of a ring, to the posies stuffed in the pockets of the dead, the cremation of hundreds of dead bodies, and the high death rate. The Bubonic plague has been around for three thousand years ad epidemics are recorded as early as 224 BC, China. The bubonic plague , also known as the Black Death, had three major pandemics. The Plague of Justinian in 541 AD is the first know pandemic on record. This outbreak is thought to have started in Ethiopia or Egypt. Constantinople imported massive amounts of grain from Egypt, which led to farther spread of the plague. The plague was killing nearly 10,000 people every day and in the end destroyed 20-25 percent of the Constantinople's population.
