Comparison of the Poems �My last duchess� and �Porphyrias Lover� by Robert Browning Both of these poems written by Robert Browning in the 19th Century were written in the form of a dramatic monologue. They are also both written by male lovers discussing their emotional problems with women. This causes the reader to become more involved in the poem and can feel more emotion about the poem than if it was written in the third person. Firstly we must remember that Browning was writing these poems in the mid 19th century. In this time women were treated with a lot less respect and less equally than they are today. For example even a flash of a lady�s shoulder-like in Porphyrias lover-or an ankle would be seen as equivalent to a women showing her breasts in the 21st century, it was quite simply unacceptable. My second point is that in both poems the speakers seem to show what could only be described as an unnatural possessiveness towards their women.
