China’s Degradation of Tibet’s Environment Tibet is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful, ancient, and culturally significant regions of the world. Unfortunately, since 1949 the communist regime in China does not feel the same way. In 1949, the newly formed communist government in China invaded Tibet in order to establish a global reputation associated with the use of force and to “steal” the numerous natural resources native to Tibet. Shortly after, the Chinese government imposed a treaty on Tibet in which they guaranteed an independent Tibetan government. As China took its control over Tibet, violations of the treaty became a common occurrence. In the invasion, which lasted several years due to Tibet’s harsh terrain, the People’s Liberation Army destroyed more than ninety percent of the monasteries in Tibet . This was only the beginning of China’s devastation of Tibetan culture.
