How does Willy Russell present power in Blood Brothers? Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

‘Blood Brothers’ was written in the early 1980’s by Willy Russell, who years before he wrote it performed as a singer-songwriter in clubs and pubs while he was working during the day as a ladies’ hairdresser. Russell was brought up in 1940’s Liverpool in a predominantly female household. He therefore had a view of women as being strong and this is why all his female characters are strong and realistic. For example, we never see Mrs Johnstone never feeling sorry for herself at any point in the play, she is strong throughout. Willy Russell presents power in various different ways in the play. One of those ways is through dramatic devices, such as the narrator and the scenery. The narrator is a constant, sinister presence in the play and is usually a man dressed in a long black coat, which is one of the main reasons this character so dark. Another reason is the fact that he is omniscient and constantly reminds us of what has been done and how the situation is gradually getting worse.
