Cloning is a form of asexual reproduction in which an embryo is created, not by the �natural� method of a sperm (male) cell fertilizing an egg (female) cell, but by using technology to replicate the genetic makeup of a single individual (Hansen). Human Cloning starts with construction of an embryo. In a technique called somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), the chromosomes of an egg cell are replaced with the nucleus of a somatic (body) cell. If the resulting embryo is then inserted into a womb in hopes of a live birth, it is called �reproductive cloning� If the embryo is destroyed to harvest its stem cells for experiments; it is called �therapeutic cloning.� But these are not two separate types of cloning: The same embryo produced by the same technique is the starting point for both uses. Therapeutic cloning, or somatic cell nuclear transfer technology (SCNT), as scientists call it) is fundamentally different.
