The Nature of Logic to Critical Thinking For all mankind, logic and critical thinking plays an enormous role in our everyday lives. In order to accurately explain the nature of logic to critical thinking, we must first examine the definitions of each of the terms. First, “Logic” is defined as the science or art of exact reasoning, or of pure and formal thought (The New Webster’s Lexicon Dictionary, 1998), or it can be thought of as the study of methods and principles used in distinguishing correct from incorrect reasoning. “Critical” means discerning, based on thorough knowledge (The New Webster’s Lexicon Dictionary, 1998). “Thinking” is defined as to turn something over in the mind (The New Webster’s Lexicon Dictionary, 1998). “Thinking” can also be defined as the activity of the brain that can potentially be communicated. With that said one can understand that pure reasoning when combined with thorough knowledge can be turned over in the mind and potentially communicated.
