Varina Davis Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Who is Varina Davis? Varina Davis is the wife of Jefferson Davis. She was born to William B. Howell and Margaret Lousia Kempe on May 7, 1826, at home in Natchez, Mississippi. Varina Davis was a very religious woman and very intelligent. She also was an excellent hostess. Her intelligence and political interests helped her in her years as the “First Lady of the Confederacy.” Varina grew up in a carefree world at The Briers. She explored the river or played in the woods near her home. Neighbors and family called her a “tom boy” for the activities that she performed and her lack of fear. When Varina was very young, she had an interest in reading. Varina received little formal education and was tutored by a family friend. Varina Davis also attended school at Madame Greenland in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On Varina’s seventeenth birthday she received an invitation to visit the Hurricane Plantation. Before she got to the plantation, they had to make a stop at the Diamond Place because it was such a long way to the plantation. When she was there Varina met Jefferson Davis ......
