The title of Renaissance scholar and historian John Hale’s 1993 book, The Civilization of Europe in the Renaissance, is not only a reference to Jacob Burckhardt’s seminal tome on the Renaissance, The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy, it is in effect also a play on words. In his text, Hale explores what might now be colloquially considered to be the idea of ‘civilization’; i.e. the society, culture, and structure of the countries that made up Europe at the time of the Renaissance, as well as carefully detailing how Europe became ‘civilized.’ Hale emphasizes his precise uses of the word in the opening of his chapter on ‘civility’ wherein he explains the difference between ‘civility’ and ‘civilization’.
