Researches such as Solomon Asch, Stanley Milgram, Bibb Latane and John Darley have conducted experiments to exemplify how this it true. Conformity is defined as the altering of one's behavior or opinions to match those of others. Mazafer Sherif was one of the first researchers to put this phenomena into effect. His studies included the autokinetic effect in which a motionless point of light seems to move when seen in a completely dark environment. This happens because there is no foundation of reference and therefore people can't balance for small eye movements. Sherif had participants enter a room alone and had them estimate how far the light moved. Some saw the light move only an inch or two, others saw it move eight inches or more.
