Eva Hoffman�s first encounters in Canada are not positive. After a month of attending to a �newcomers� school, ��after spending a month in a school for �newcomers�� (10). In this story, Eva encounters difficulties with classmates, and here mother is sent to jail for the more minute thing. Eva, having 12 years of age, is sent to court to defend her mother. Eva, like many other immigrants, is treated unfairly, because of cultural conflict and racism, and is not able to express herself reasonably. On her first days of seventh grade, Eva is sent to memorize a poem. After some days attending this classroom, Eva sees children shouting loudly and girls with too much make-up, her classmates. ��they laugh too loudly and the girls wore too much make-up� (10). They mostly ignore her because she is not one of �them�. When Eva goes home to memorize a poem she studies it with much enthusiasm. ��and the night before I recited it to my mother�that�s what you would do in a Polish school�(11). The day afterwards she is shocked, as she did not study the accurate way, the way one does in Canada. ......
