In this world we are surrounded by visual culture all our lives. Visual culture is a model of critical thinking about the world of images saturating contemporary life; it examines the uses and meanings of images. In this case, I will explore the ideologies of the representation of women and the female body in patriarchy culture through the use of visual culture. The ways in which women and the female body are signified and how it demonstrates that feminine or feminist language is in use within visual culture. In society today patriarchy culture is embedded within visual imagery, this male leadership, position of authority and privileging men over women is apparent within visual culture from the most primitive works of art. In reference to Velazquez’s ‘Rokeby Venus’ where the figure in the painting seems to articulate an image of perfection – women in her prime, young, healthy and fertile. ‘She is…the Goddess of Youth and Health, the embodiment of elastic strength and vitality – of perfection of Womanhood at the moment when it passes from the bud to the flower.’ The struggle......
