Irritable Bowel Syndrome, popularly known as IBS, is a common intestinal condition. Most information about it is unknown and poorly understood. More than 30% of Americans experience IBS at one point in their lives; Only a mere 15% ever consult a doctor about it (2). IBS has many causes and effects on the smooth muscle system according to a person�s severity level. However, there are modern solutions, answers, and a positive outlook on how to deal and live with this problem. There are three types of muscle systems in a human body - skeletal, cardiac, and smooth. The skeletal and cardiac muscle systems are striated, meaning their fibers are bonded together by sarcomeres. These functional units are composed of thick (myosin), think (actin), and elastic (titin) filaments (1). Muscle contraction occurs when the myosin head pulls the actin filaments towards one another. ATP then breaks the head with actin. It then returns to its original position until another contraction is made (1).
