Out of Place at the BMA The Baltimore Museum of Art, a museum known for its great collections; the Cone collection, as well as works by Picasso, Matisse, Manet, Degas, and van Gogh to name a few. What many do not know is the atmosphere the BMA provides. Not only is it well lit, with nice displays, but an atmosphere. This atmosphere is not one of free expression and enlightenment, but one of close-mindedness and discomfort. Throughout a tour of the first floor of the BMA, the feelings of discomfort and of not belonging become clear, like a giant pink elephant in the room. Upon entrance into the museum you are immediately hit with the commercialism of today�s age- the gift shop. A quick look around will not only reveal art books, prints of the paintings hanging up, but toys for children as well that just don�t fit with the building you are in. Pirate swords, stuffed animals, action figures, all out of place � yet they are all still much a part of the art museum gift shop. The �people-pleasing� atmosphere is confirmed as a small grandfatherly-type man greets you into the B......
