Animals must be able to move through their environment for a variety of reasons. Whether it is to catch food, find a habitat or to escape from predators, locomotion is essential. As a result, animals have evolved in different ways to make movement through their environment easier. Another thing that animals rely on is the support of their bodies. Usually movement and support go hand in hand. In different classes of animal, the way their body is supported changes. Animal movement is reliant on the force of muscles on a rigid skeletal system. There are three types of skeletal systems, which are hydrostatic, exoskeletal and endoskeletal. Examples of hydrostatic skeletons are found in earthworms and jellyfish. In this instance, muscle fibres are surrounded by a fluid filled cavity. As the muscles tighten, the fluid cavity changes shape. In the example of the earthworm, the segments of the body are compressed and extended longitudinally, moving the worm forwards. This motion is called peristalsis as it happens in a wave-like motion.
