Hamlet versus Oedipus Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The two plays, Hamlet, by William Shakespeare and Oedipus the King, by Sophocles, share a common bond of illusion and innocence. In these two plays, two kings must leave their innocence behind as the truth leads them first to enlightenment and then to their disgrace. Hamlet is a tragic hero, while Oedipus is a tragic villain. Hamlet must avenge his father's death. Oedipus, on the other hand, kills his own father and unwillingly marries his own mother, thus sealing his own fate and fulfilling the prophecy that was decided for him. Hamlet is driven by freewill and creates his own fate. Hamlet sees the ghost of his deceased father and it tells him the now current king, Hamlet's uncle Claudius, murdered him. Hamlet has to think about how he will avenge his father's death, but because his only knowledge came from a ghost that only Hamlet heard speak, he is hesitant to seek justice quickly. Hamlet being a rational man thinks out a plan to show others the truth about Claudius by writing a play of the events that just occurred. Hamlet knows his anger toward his uncle may cause c......
