The word �gothic� has come to mean quite a number of things by this day and age. It could mean a particular style of art, be it in the form of novels, paintings, or architecture; however, it could mean �medieval� or �uncouth.� It could even refer to a certain type of music and its fans. What it originally meant is �of, relating to, or resembling the Goths, their civilization, or their language�. A gothic novel is a novel in which supernatural horrors and an atmosphere of unknown terror pervades the action. The setting is often a dark, mysterious castle, where ghosts and sinister humans roam menacingly. The Gothic creates feelings of gloom, mystery, and suspense and tends to the dramatic and the sensational, like incest, diabolism, and nameless terrors. �The Monkey's Paw,� �The Minister's Black Veil,� �The Birthmark,� and �the Raven� are all gothic short stories or poems.
