Timeline: Describe and Analyse the Feudal System Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The film Timeline, directed by Richard Donner, is about a group of archaeologists who travel back in time to Castleguard France, 1357. The film’s setting and characters describe the feudal system. The feudal system is based on land and military service. A lord receives land from the king in return for loyalty and military service. The lord than can give a part of his land to a knight in return for his services and protection and the knight may give some of his land to peasants in return for taxes, service, and percentages of crops. In the film Lord Oliver is one of the highest ranking people in the feudal system. Lord Oliver is rude, arrogant and brutal. He treats everyone badly and is not very honourable. When the audience first see Lord Oliver he is having mock sword fights with his men, who are obviously letting him win. He is fighting dirty but no one would fight dirty back because they know he has power over them. Closer to the end of the movie he tries to hang the French Lord’s sister and yet no one dare complain because he has supremacy and control over them. The men know ......
