The current decline in literacy rates have become a major concern for those working in the education sector. As a result, it is crucial for teachers to be equipped with the knowledge and expertise to model and teach effective literacy skills. During my placement at Assumption Catholic High School, the teaching staff offered various ideas and suggestions in allowing me to play a role in the development of students� literacy skills. One method for increasing literacy across the entire school was the use of a weekly reading period. Each Monday morning the school would follow a reading schedule that included a 30 minute block allocated specifically for reading. Students were allowed to read material of interest to them, such as books, magazine or newspaper articles. During my experience with the Physical Education classes, students seemed particularly interested in reading current sporting events, specifically those contained in the Windsor Star newspaper.
