A. The ontological argument argues the existence of God using A-priori knowledge; that which is gained through reason and not through experience. Anselm an 11th century theist philosopher believed, God is ‘that than which nothing greater can be conceived,’ by this he meant, God is supremely perfect. He thought that because everyone agrees that if God existed he would be the most perfect being conceivable, even those who do not believe God exists (atheists). To be perfect though, he must exist, therefore God exists. Descartes a 16th century philosopher updated Anselm’s view on the ontological argument and famously said ‘I think therefore I am,’ He, also believed, God is the most perfect being conceivable and he gave the example of a triangle, to be a triangle it must have three angles that add up to 180º, if you changed this then it would not be a true triangle, just as if you took the concept of existence from God then he would not be perfect and therefore not truly be God.
