Aim: The aim of my investigation is to find out how the substrate concentration, hydrogen peroxide affects the rate of reaction of the enzyme catalase. I will do this by reacting different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide with the same volume of catalase (yeast mixed with water) and then observe how much time it takes for my reaction to take place, and how much oxygen is evolved. Hypothesis: I predict that as the substrate concentration (hydrogen peroxide) increases the rate of reaction will increase. I predict that as the substrate concentration decreases, more time will be taken for the oxygen to be evolved. However when the enzyme molecules exceed the number of substrates available in hydrogen peroxide the reaction will no longer increase. This is due there being more substrate molecules to react with the active site thus more frequent successful collisions. Therefore; when the hydrogen peroxide particles break down faster, more oxygen and water can be released. Thus; a faster reaction can take place.
