Plato and Machiavelli Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Machiavelli’s “The Morals of the Prince” and Plato’s “The Allegory of the Cave” both demonstrate the representation of the views upon human nature. Both illustrating the perspective of nature, Machiavelli and Plato strive to give their solutions and advice of how to experience life. While Machiavelli depicts a cynical and negative perspective, Plato develops a more unified and cohesive illustration on human nature. Along with his discussion of virtues, Machiavelli considers mercy and cruelty. He bases his judgment on consideration of what benefits the most people as he comes down on the side of the supposedly bad quality. It is no use to be merciful if by doing so, a prince allows disorder in his state to get out of control. A controlled amount of cruelty, which harms a few, can avert widespread violence and lawlessness, which harms many. However, Plato addresses this issue in an opposite manner.
