The Boldt Decision
Salmon and other freshwater fish are a valuable natural resource in the Pacific Northwest. When European-American settlers moved to the region in the middle of the 19th Century, the fish in the Columbia River and its tributaries were a contested natural resource1. The Native Americans struggled to keep their historically important resource from the settlers. The various tribes in Washington territory signed an agreement with the territorial governor in 1850 protecting their claim to the fish in the rivers. This treaty, the Treaty of Medicine Creek1, became largely ignored and many European-American settlers became wealthy from the fish in the Columbia. In the 1960’s and 1970’s, there was a growing movement by the unified tribes of the Pacific Northwest to sue for their right to the fish back. A landmark ruling was awarded in the case of U.S. vs. Washington, now known as the Boldt Decision.
