Samuel Furner Philosophy 3730 September 21, 2007 A Difference in Principle Throughout history people have found themselves set in a certain economic position. The family we were born into dictates our economic class, and the benefits or burdens associated with our class were seen as set or fixed, either by human nature or by God. However in an organized society we have found that this distribution of our economic benefits and or burdens can be affected by our government. According to Rawls a society is better off when they seek to better the lives of those that are least advantaged. This idea is what Rawls would call the “difference principle.” To better understand the difference principle one should consider Rawl’s “original position”, in which a representative of an individual with limited information about them attempt to agree on how a society should be set up. These representatives would agree to two principles. First, all individuals of society are able to pursue their own goals and that no individual be disadvantaged by their race, gender or class.
