In the book, The Children of the Forest, anthropologist Kevin Duffy describes his first hand experiences while living among the Mbuti pygmies in the Ituri Forest of Zaire. First visiting in 1954, Duffy is one of the first anthropologists to have ever lived among the Mbuti. Winning their trust and becoming their good friend, Duffy was accepted by the Mbuti and allowed to participate in every aspect of their lives. He examines and compares the Efe and the Bila Mbuti pygmies, the archers and the net hunters. He also explains the relationship between the Mbuti and their "owners," the village cultivators who now share the forest with them. The author relates his experiences as a participant observer of the Mbuti pygmies in a manner that is down to earth and simple to follow. He portrays them as a peaceful and happy people, needing only a dry, friendly forest and signs that the hunting is good. They lead a comparatively carefree life and have relatively little to do with witchcraft, sorcery, or superstitious beliefs. They always find time for beautiful music and singing. ......
