Heart of Darkness: Reflection of Conrad�s Racism Heart of Darkness has long been a novel accepted and praised by men. It is part of the canon of great literary works and has been read by many. It does not sit well with Chinua Achebe that Heart of Darkness is revered as a legendary title. He fins the work vile, disgusting, and full of lies. From the text, he concludes that Joseph Conrad is a racist, and states that the novel should be removed from the canon. Achebe is incorrect in deeming Conrad a racist, and is lead to do so by taking the novella out of its historical context. Conrad often traveled to many exotic places in the world when he was young, and the location of one of his adventures was the Congo. He incorporated his experiences into his work, trying to portray as accurately as possible, through the character Marlow, the mindset of a typical European of the time and setting.
