Jay Gatsby: Loyal, Determined, but Living in the Past The Great Gatsby (1923) is a book that mysteriously focuses on the life of Jay Gatsby through Nick Carraway’s eyes. Jay Gatsby is one of the main characters and has many characteristics that develop him into the person he is. He learns and experiences things throughout his life that allow him to decide what he wants to get out of life. These experiences give him some of his characteristics. Like any other person, he has positive and negative characteristics. Two positive characteristics are his loyalty and his determination. One of his negative characteristics is his tendency to live in the past. This becomes a negative characteristic because it does not allow him to continue on in his life because he is too obsessed with what happened in the past. Gatsby’s characteristics support a truly great character of faithfulness and determination, but he becomes miserable because he is constantly living in the past.
