Macbeth is one of the William Shakespeare�s shortest plays, but it finely portrays a human drama of ambition, desire, and guilt. The protagonist, Macbeth, is seen to be a contradictory character who has fear of fear itself. This can be seen through his soliloquy, his conversations as well as his reaction in many scenes. Shakespeare uses a range of figurative language and other language features to vividly and dramatically reveal Macbeth�s fear of fear. The audience is first invited into Macbeth�s mind during his soliloquy in Act 1, Scene 3, lines 125 � 141. The soliloquy occurs after the witches� prophesies and Macbeth portrays a deeply disturbed mind, indicating his ambition and desire for power and outlining his fear of fear. Macbeth�s repeated use of �if� and �why� shows double characteristics of ambition and fear in Macbeth. �Whose horrid image doth unfix my hair/And make my seated heart knock at my ribs/Against the use of nature?...� (lines 134-135), the use of this personification gives the heart the human quality of knocking. It is also a metaphor and conjures up the image ......
