Objectivization of Women in Ferres The Youngest Doll Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Rosario Ferre’s The Youngest Doll is a feminist story about the revenge of women who have been manipulated and exploited by men. It revolves around the traditional image of the doll, which is associated closely with that of woman. The doll symbolizes not only the objectivization of women, but also their assumed sexual innocence and perpetual child-like condition; it also stands for submission, silence and dependence. The use of symbolism and imagery all through the narrative illustrates the problem of women being used as objects by men. During the story The Youngest Doll men seem to have control over women. This narrative has an offensive doctor-patient incident that shows how men in social standing exploit their authority and, specifically, how they treat women as objects. The physician had power over the aunt by not taking the prawn out of her leg so his son would have money for college. If a prawn had bitten a man he almost certainly would have been healed. An investigation would occur, if needed, to discover remedies. A woman was not healed, though, even when there......
