Virtue vs. Law in Confucianism
With hundreds of years under the rule of law in Western culture, it is hard to imagine anything different. However, Confucius, one of the most influential thinkers in Asian culture, believed in a different form of governing ourselves. He had lived during the “warring states” period in Chinese history and had witnessed firsthand what tyrannical and warring governments could do to human nature. Because of this, he believed that when government is run though virtue rather than law, it is superior and would help us on our way to human-heartedness (ren). But the real question is, can such a government exist? Would a government run primarily by virtue be successful? These are the questions Confucius tries to answer but cannot really explain. As such, Confucius’ idea of a government run mainly by virtue cannot be implemented as there are too many other factors that determine how a government is run.
In Confucian philosophy there is one main aspect of life that all human beings must cultivate to become “human”. This was human-heartedness, or “ren”......
