There are many problems that exist in our society today that are lingering effects of events that took place back in the early history of this country. Though taking place many years ago these historic events have been both positive and negative influences on what are society has become today. One prime example is the relations between blacks and whites and how these relations have been affected by the enslavement of African Americans. Over 140 years ago slavery was abolished but African Americans continue to suffer from its residual effects socially, psychologically, and economically. The term racism which is the belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to another is something that plagues our society today. Though there is racism between many other different races and cultural backgrounds none is more visible than that of blacks and whites.
