Environmental Kuznets Curve Kuznets curve is essentially the graphical representation of economic inequalities increasing over time. Then, at a critical point the graph begins to decrease. The Environmental Kuznets Curve questions whether economic growth brings improving or worsening environmental performance. By looking at the curve it is seen that both occur, but at different times of the developing process. Basically, the hypothesis is that at low incomes, environmental impact per dollar GDP increases with increasing GDP per capita, while at high incomes it declines. The basic Environmental Kuznets Curve takes the shape of an inverted U. Development in light of the facts shown by the Kuznets Curve has looked bright lately, but this was not always the case. Roughly a decade ago developed countries reduced emissions by outsourcing dirty production to developing countries. The developing countries in turn, found it harder to reduce emissions.
