One of the challenges facing any investigation into ethnicity is that there appears to be no agreed consensus on defining what constitutes an ‘ethnic group’. For example, ethnicity could be identified in terms of ‘religion’, ‘national and geographical origin’, ‘skin colour’ and ‘language spoken’: racial, religious or linguistic characteristics, however, seem to be the most accepted criteria on which to define ‘ethnicity’ (Bradford, 2006:1). The 2001 Consensus conducted in the UK revealed that British society is “more culturally diverse than ever before” (statistics.gov.uk, 2001), indicating that 4.6 million people from ‘non-White backgrounds’ made up 7.9% of the UK population which was found to be concentrated in “large urban areas” (ibid). This picture of ethnic groups in the UK represents a significant change from the last consensus, and this is supported by Bradford (2006) who has emphasised “the last fifty years have seen the emergence of some new, predominantly British-born, ethnic minorities”.
