Aims/Hypothesis There is still significant differences’ in educational achievement across the social classes. My aim is to examine why working class pupils are not achieving grades equivalent to their middle class counterparts. I will be exploring the concepts of material deprivation, and cultural capital, because this is what the working classes seem to lack. I am very interested in this topic, because I think that it is very unfair that middle-class children have an advantage over working- class pupils in education. I refer to the work of Douglas and Gewirtz in the content as they have studied this issue. (100) Context My first concept is cultural deprivation. Cultural deprivation theorists argue that most of us begin to acquire the basic values, attitudes and skills that are needed for educational success through primary socialisation in the family. The basic “cultural equipment” includes things such as language, self discipline and reasoning skills.
