How did a new land, founded as colonies motivated with religious objectives, be the first nation to develop a barrier between church and state? A group that Frank Lambert, in his book titled The Founding Fathers and the Place of Religion in America, calls the Planting Fathers, brought Old World ideas and dreams of building a "City upon a Hill." Lambert states that in the 1720’s most people thought that America was a nation of Protestant religions. Out of the half million people in America at the time, 85% lived in provinces of either the Church of England or the Congregational Churches. The Anglican Church was established in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, North and South Carolina and loosely in New York. The Anglicans conformed to English law. In Virginia, where there were almost no puritans, colonists paid taxes to the Anglican Church and assumed that religion would be part of their legal communities.
