The Day the Cowboys Quit by Elmer Kelton was a very enjoyable book that told a great story. The book tells about the life of the cowboys back in the 1880s, and all of the hardships and disagreements that took place during that time. The book is based on the consequences of the social, economic and political changes that happened, and the different opinions of the two groups who both thought that their separate view was correct. Elmer Kelton begins by introducing Hugh Hitchcock, who is the main character in the book. Hitch and his two friends, Rascal and Law McGinty, work for their long time friend Charlie, who is the owner of the W Ranch. During this time, ranching was a way of life, and one of the only ways to get wealthy. The big outfits decided to post certain rules over the cowboys because they felt like the time was changing and that people could no longer be trusted. As a result of the rules, many cowboys went on strike and refused to work for any company who had enforced them.
