Among the many wars that Rome fought there were three in particular that really caught my attention; the Punic Wars. There were a series of three wars, Rome vs. Carthage. The primary cause of the Punic Wars was the clash of interests between the expanding Carthaginian and Roman empires. The First Punic war was fought from 264-241 BC. It was fought over who would gain control of Sicily. In order to fight the Carthaginians and at Sicily the Romans had to cross the straits of Messina on two legions, which is the major unit of the Roman army consisting of 3,000 to 6,000 infantry troops and 100 to 200 cavalry. When the Romans got to Sicily they had to fight off Syracuse and easily won but in order to keep Sicily the Romans still had to fight the Carthaginians. When they fought it was one of the hardest sea battles in recorded ancient times. The Romans would fight sea battles using crows, the crows were tied to the mast of the ship and when enemy ships were close enough, the Romans would let down the crows and board the enemy ship.
