�The Great Gatsby� was written by a man named F. Scott Fitzgerald. The book is set in the 1920�s, in a time when alcohol was made illegal in the United States, also known as the prohibition. My why question that I am asking about this book is why is the use of alcohol so prominent throughout this book? There are many ways in which alcohol played a toll in this book. First of all, the use of it is present through out a good portion of the book because of the main character Jay Gatsby�s parties that he has every weekend for his friends, and some people he has not even met before. Gatsby is a bootlegger, and much of his time is dedicated to his work, this is evident in several passages, where conversations are cut short by mysterious phone calls: �Philadelphia wants you on the phone sir� (chapter3). All of his possessions such as his house and his car (which play such an important and symbolic role in the plot) are impregnated with the provenance of his money.
