Anne Sextons Fascination with Van Goghs Starry Night Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In Anne Sexton’s, “The Starry Night,” she writes about her interpretation of Van Gogh’s painting, “Starry Night.” Her writing isn’t necessarily descriptive of the picture’s appearance as it is interpretative of the emotions she is feeling while viewing this painting. Van Gogh and Sexton both struggled with mental and psychological disorders which led to their suicides. They were both unhappy with the way they were viewed by the outside world and struggled with intimate relationships. Anne Sexton was drawn to, “Starry Night,” due to the similarities of darkness and gloom both artists experienced in their lives. Van Gogh used his happiness or anguish (which strongly differed due to his manic depression) to create his artwork. Van Gogh is the father of expressionism-the artistic style in which the artist attempts to depict not objective reality but rather the subjective emotions and responses that objects and events arouse in him (Expressionism.) Sexton was the mother of confessional poetry-a form of poetry which takes as its subject the intimate details of the poet's own life ......
