Jewish Life in Krakow: Before, During, and After WWII
The Holocaust is the most horrific event in European history. Although it had a tremendous effect on every ethnic group living within Europe it clearly was most devastating to the Jews. Jewish communal living within Eastern Europe was all but wiped out. One Jewish community that was thriving in southern Poland prior to WWII and is still completely devastated today is Krakow. Krakow went from the center of Jewish political and social life in Poland in the 1930’s to a victim of Nazi ideology and hatred that led to ghettos, concentration camps and death camps. Although there were unspeakable atrocities occurring and a feeling that there was no hope left in Eastern Europe, there were still many pockets of resistance and heroism. The stories of resistance and rescue efforts which led to survivors are nothing short of miraculous. These stories, coupled with the grass roots movement to revitalize the Jewish community within Krakow today, give a sliver of light to an otherwise dreadfully dark time in history.
