The Gin Act of 1751 was proposed in order to control the most popular drink in England, Gin. From 1688 up until the government viewed the sale of gin with an incoherent taxation policy. “Finally the Gin Act of 1751 prohibited gin distillers from selling to unlicensed merchants, restricted retail licenses to substantial property holders, and charged high fees to those merchants eligible for retail licenses. (1)” This acted was created upon the social and religious reasons against gin, despite the economic and political reasons to keep the gin trade active.
There was a point where gin began to rival beer as the most popular drink in England. From 1701 to 1751 when the Act was put into place, the sale of gin had drastically gone up 500 percent (2). Daniel Defoe, social commentator, saw gin as a great economic boost. The production of grain in England was much more than the people or cattle could consume, this prevented disaster, carrying off a great quantity of grain.
