Christopher J. Syrnyk Madeleine Grills Exploratory Summary 11/13/06 Is Alcoholism a disease? In many U.S. rehabilitation centers, alcoholism is labeled a disease. It has run in my family for several generations. I have seen this problem first hand and have not been able to determine whether I believe alcoholism is a disease or a choice. This question perplexes me because people conquer alcoholism through choices they choose to make. I ask myself how can people label alcoholism a disease when the cure is through making personal choices? The National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) estimates there are 14 million Americans who are dependent upon alcohol in the United States. The dominant theory on alcoholism in the United States is the disease model, which says alcoholism is caused by ones genetic make-up as well as lifestyle choices. The model believes alcoholism is a genetic disorder that leads to a mental obsession. A mental obsession does not only apply to alcohol, but it can be any substance a person can become obsessed with.
