Over the past few weeks we have been looking at the play Blood Brothers written by Willy Russell. Willy Russell based his play in 1980’s Liverpool which had lots of problems at the time as you may know. Due to the closing down of mining sites in the 1980’s, Northern England had lots of unemployment, resulting with a divide in classes. This left people who were unemployed stereotyped as the working class and the richer people who kept their jobs as the middle class. Evidently Russell’s view of society was that the working class were treated as if they were “daft, stupid and undeserving”. In this essay I will be analysing how Russell attempts to deal with this view of the working class in his play, through dramatic devices and language.
Russell uses dramatic irony in his play as a dramatic device, we see this when ‘the lights come up to show a re-enactment of the final moments of the play - the deaths of Mickey and Edward’.
