With their different ideals, and their yearning to contain the other’s system of governing, conflict between the two nations became inevitable. Initially, there were strong disagreements over various matters during post-war conferences, as suspicion built between the capitalist US and the communist USSR. The advent of the Atom Bomb in the 1940’s bought a new and dangerous dimension to discussions. With both sides harbouring nuclear capabilities, maintaining peace between the two nations became crucial. Despite this, the two nations continued to argue over the USSR’s increased influence over Eastern Europe and Asia, with the US determined to repel this communist influence. Yet as tension grew throughout the 1950’s, coupled with the new, sophisticated weapon technology, the threat of nuclear war became increasingly probable.
