Suspicion, incrimination, and inquiry. Living with the fear that the hysteria that had overtaken the surrounding communities would overtake the world. Lives forever ruined and relationships tarnished and stopped in their very tracks. The Salem Witch Trials and the Red Scare are characteristics of these actions that engulfed the world throughout two very different periods in time. The commonality between the two is not by mere happenstance though, these two different events both had one key ingredient that made them what they were, fear. Arthur Miller, a renowned writer that lived during the time of the Red Scare, knew his history well and wrote the gripping play, The Crucible, to relate the Red Scare to the Salem Witch Trials. He opened everyone's eyes to the disastrous effects that human paranoia can have. The Salem Witch Trials occurred in 1692 in a little town in Massachusetts. They resulted from the biggest witch hunt in American history (World Book Volume 17 p.61). The geography of the town played a big part in the Salem Witch Trials.
