There are many examples of attitudes towards love and marriage presented in Act 3 scenes 4 and 5. Apart from the love presented by Romeo and Juliet, they mostly reflect the time in which the play was set; in Elizabethan times, marriage was a business arrangement and love was irrelevant. An example of this business type marriage is between Capulet and Lady Capulet. From the two scenes Shakespeare gives the impression of a real lack of love between them from the language that he gives them to use on stage. For example ‘Ay sir’, is how Lady Capulet refers to Capulet. This language selected by Shakespeare makes the audience suspect a lack of love between them. There is evidence of lust and a secret sexual relationship between Lady Capulet and Tybalt. It is not obvious, but can be picked up on in Act 3 Scene 4. It is the reaction to Tybalt’s death from Lady Capulet that implies on an affair. Lady Capulet’s reaction is very violent as she expresses a strong hatred for Romeo.
